I looked into this a while back, and I am convinced that it was a hoax. There were no proven genetic studies done on this thing, just a claim of 76 chromosomes, and all articles I could find about it (including wikipedia) all reference the same Portuguese article with I think 4 pictures and not much else. Maybe someone found more on this than I could, but it looks fake to me.
