Aren't some (many?) telecom switches run with Erlang? I haven't used it, but from what I understand it's more functional than OO, is it not?

  No - only few Ericsson ones are written in Erlang. Most use C++ and few softswitches use Java.

  Freeswitch and Asterisk are both written largely in C, although it's unclear if that's representative of industry practice.
