A mix of right-place-right-time, further luck, and network effects. Tumblr did better than many alternatives, but eventually shot itself in the foot (well, was shot in the foot by its parent) when it alienated a chunk of the audience it did have by deleting a lot of content in order to appease potential advertisers.
