But putting politics aside, Moscow itself is actually a gem — at least, it was before the war (now when many bright people have fled the country, I guess it is no more). It is a vibrant, dense, high-tech, urbanist city. The problem is that it is basically (and maybe also St. Petersburg) is the only livable city in Russia. The wealth centralization in Russia is just incredible. Even within Moscow itself it follows the same centralization pattern — the only livable districts in Moscow are the central ones, all peripheral is trash.
So that Tucker Carlson guy basically enjoyed that tiny 0.01% of Russia that is actually cool (and serves as a showcase for foreigners), but hey, how about the rest 99.99%?..
P.S. couldn't read the whole article, it is under the paywall.
- sneed_chucker 3y agoI know that basically all the wealth of the country is concentrated in Moscow and Petersburg, but are they really the only livable cities? I was under the impression that several of the larger cities are pretty nice and modern, like Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Kazan, and so on.
- xpl 3y agoPretty much everyone in Russia dreams to live in Moscow. Owning an apartment in Moscow is the equivalent of "American Dream" in Russia. Other cities are livable of course in a literal sense, and there are nice places to visit. But they're overall lackluster compared to the capital. And the average income is many times smaller there.
- protomolecule 3y ago"the only livable city in Russia" That's funny. Did you leave Russia in the 90s?
- maximinus_thrax 3y ago> The problem is that it is basically (and maybe also St. Petersburg) is the only livable city in Russia What about Novosibirsk? I asked some of my Russian colleagues at one point about cities in Russia and I got roughly the same response: - if you want to visit, St. Petersburg/Moscow - if you want to live there, St. Petersburg/Moscow/Novosibirsk.
