This is a single-celled organism we're talking about here, to me (was vegetarian, then vegan, now neither) that's more like yeast, and the fact that it's in the animal kingdom is a technicality. None of these cells are neural tissue so it's incapable of suffering in any way we would recognize. But I would expect the more crunchy-granola school of vegans to find the idea horrifying and refuse to eat it.
