Wilson's new Airless basketball costs $2,500, but it will sell out in seconds
- jfengel 3y agoDespite having tested it hundreds of thousands of times in the lab, the ball has yet to be treated like any other ball that’s just hanging around the gym. Sorry to be cynical, but I bet it has been, and found wanting. I can't imagine so many people working on it for so long and not a single one saying "Let's play a quick game with it." It would make a really cool video. And since the whole point of this is to attract attention, that could not have escaped their notice. So I'm sure they did try, and it didn't work well enough. It would be remarkable if it really did work. Mimicking the exact behavior of an elastic bladder as it compresses and springs back sounds really, really, really hard. I'm sure it manages to do some subset of that behavior perfectly well in the lab. But I also have a feeling anybody who has ever spent time with a basketball will go "Ewww, it's just not right".
