  OpenAI is not a public service, but they've certainly opened themselves to this type of criticism with their high-horsing about "benefiting humanity" and yadda yadda. Meanwhile their actions suggest they're first and foremost interested in benefiting themselves and whoever's given them the most money, which certainly isn't their users.
