Is this an Ivy League professor stating that they no longer want to teach students because the quality of graduates is dropping?
Sounds like they're calling out their own poor teaching methods?
- defrost 3y agoNo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mart%C3%ADn_Varsavsky https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mart%C3%ADn_Varsavsky It's right there in the exTwitter bio: Tech entrepreneur 5 time unicorn founder. Tech investor, father of 7
- Festro 3y agoFrom the Wikipedia entry: "In 2012 Varsavsky began teaching entrepreneurship at Columbia University in New York City.[19]" So, yes?
- rsynnott 3y agoOkay, so I hate to be that person, because I'm always irritated by the "humanities don't real, only STEM is proper university" attitude that's somewhat prevalent on here, but... surely 'entrepreneurship' is not a real academic discipline, taught in proper universities? Like, I mean, I suppose technically he qualifies as "Ivy League professor" (maybe? 'professor' just means any lecturer in the US, right?), but he's hardly what you think of when someone _says_ that.
- richardjam73 3y agoIt is a real academic discipline. Something taught under business management.
- defrost 3y agoMaybe that's a Yes for you. Not my bar for "Ivy League professor" .. I prefer my world class professors to have little more than a [19] -> LinkedIn [self-published source], but we can't all have the same standards.
- wslh 3y agoNo, he is saying that explicitly: "he predicted that universities would stop training problem solvers and educate trouble makers...". My interpretation is that universities are not educating critical thinkers.
- gigatexal 3y agoThey are. The decent ones are. When you peel back the curtain of all the deans of this and that and all the administrative waste you get to teachers who are teaching to challenge kids, who are passionate about the subjects, and are investing in the professionals of tomorrow. Good teachers and classrooms and schools challenge kids and their preconceived notions. Such was my experience anyway. Being able to think critically about information will become ever more important in this world of disinformation and demagogues.
- wslh 3y agoThe education mileage and measure varies and it is a super discussable topics. I think in the XXI century there are soft skills required like cross cultural awareness and understanding that are not yet present. It is easy to observe this when you are travelling around the world.
