I don't know, at that point I think I'd rather use an actual log aggregation system like Loki or Kibana. That way I can search, including on pods that are now gone.
The niche between "easy to get but single-container and no search" on one side and "install with helm but search all containers including historical with full-text and metrics" on the other... seems like a tiny niche to me.
edit: oh you need to install Kubetail cluster-wide too. At least no DaemonSet I guess.
- 392 3y agoI have tried unsuccessfully to get those setup on my k8s twice. The default configs don't seem sufficient for even a small shop's scale, I think I must be holding them wrong. But I'm ready to try this because it's all I need if it works.
- andres 3y agoAwesome! Let me know if you run into any issues setting it up (andres@kubetail.com)
- MuffinFlavored 3y agoLoki needs Promtail Kibana needs Elasticsearch I'm not sure if this has good enough log viewing https://github.com/kubernetes/dashboard https://github.com/kubernetes/dashboard
- remram 3y agoYes, you need to install Loki+Promtail+Grafana. You can get it all with a single Helm chart, but it is definitely more work. Personally I don't see the point of doing a little less work (still a Helm chart) to install Kubetail instead, if I'm trading search, metrics, and history.
- MuffinFlavored 3y agoPedantic: Metrics would be +Prometheus as well Fully agree with you though. The community has "moved on" to "deploy this YAML (helm chart) to your k8s cluster and configure it to your liking" as for "preferred packaging mechanism"
- remram 3y agoNo, Loki can get metrics, out of the logs. That is what I am talking about: https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/query/metric_queries/ https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/query/metric_queries/
