    I imagine like the "robot" in MIB where they open it up, and there is something not mechanical inside

    for me, it is software that controls moving hardware in a way that is "smart", but not predictable (for lack of a better word). Examples of some things that aren't robots: - Remote controlled thing that looks like a robot - An automata that is pre-programmed to do the same thing over and over - a "robot" arm in a car factory that paints the same thing over and over - etc... In other words, it needs to be somewhat smart
