You should have read and taken notes on the material before attending the class, and you should use the class to listen, validate learning, and ask questions, instead of trying to record the whole thing. But yes, do take notes about the things you didn’t see in the textbook, or mentally flag them—and I do agree that you shouldn’t obsess on it being neat.
