My old boy went through a good amount of nasty stuff in Vietnam, but was from the stuff upper lip school of emotion. He suppressed it pretty well, but it stayed with him.
The stuff the commenters describe as being labeled trauma, such as being yelled at, doesn't reach the threshold of being problematic trauma by a reasonable person.
- nonrandomstring 3y agoSame. My old fella (Korea, Malaya, nuke tests) never once would have asked for help or admitted effects. He's call trauma "silly talk". It's definitely a generational thing.

- epylar 3y agoIf it's a child being yelled at loudly almost every day for many years while growing up, I could see that as trauma.
- dimal 3y agoHaving experienced that, I can confirm that it is traumatic. And it does take a toll on your body.
- ronald_raygun 3y agoYeah but you're doing a different problem where instead of defining the threshold too low, you're defining the threshold too high. Like should our bar for trauma be really be "you were drafting against your will to go to a jungle and see your friends die while you mow down innocent villagers"? The thing is, trauma is not like "you've crossed the threshold of objective sociality accepted suffering", trauma is like "did something start to give you flashbacks? Hypervigilance? anxiety? nightmares?"
- dwaltrip 3y agoThis is an ignorant and harmful comment. As another comment said, trauma manifests as certain unique physiological effects and mental patterns. We have learned that there are many different circumstances that can bring about these effects.
