On average, I enjoy these kinds of interviews much more than leetcode. The quality of the prep work and the ad libbing makes a huge difference to the quality of the interview though. One particularly memorable interview involved verbally debugging intermittent crashes the interviewer had recently seen. Unfortunately, they had no information about the software stack, unique symptoms, or access to status registers so it ended up like:
"Is this bit of information available?"
"No"
Repeated for 30 minutes.
- bee_rider 3y agoThat seems like an interview that you passed (the company learned that you know a lot more than them about the resources available for debugging).
- pavel_lishin 3y agoIt also sounds like an interview that the company failed.
- rzzzt 3y agoAlso a high level of frustration tolerance.
- Scarblac 3y agoMore likely the interviewer was some internal recruiter type who had been given some example questions to ask but didn't know about development themselves.
- AlotOfReading 3y agoThey were an engineer on the team I would have led, not a recruiter.
