For what its worth, I don't think we've seen actual conservatives in power for 30 years either. neo-conservatism isn't very conservative at all-- for instance, conservatives really wouldn't care about gay marriage. opposing it goes against conservative principles. Both parties have become authoritarian versions of themselves. One point though- In the election of 2000 I often heard people say "If W gets elected it will be the end of abortion rights!" ... yet he had 2 terms and never actually did anything about abortion.
