Shifting left means careful development with emphasis on test and
correctness.
Shifting right is a "a pragmatic, reality-grounded approach" of
"embracing the once-taboo practice of testing in production"
The author says:
"When you observe your software operating successfully in the real
world, you know it’s genuinely ready."
Wow, I've seldom read such shameless justification for socially
irresponsible reckless development. Better just to say, "When planes
stop falling from the sky, people stop losing their savings, when the
screaming and sobbing stops ... then your product is ready."
No wonder we're facing a sea-change of regulation for commercial
software, which is long overdue.
- h2odragon 3y ago> socially irresponsible reckless development. Wow, you're fun. Not all software is "Bear the Weight of the World Infrastructure" In fact, even the things you're doing that are very important to you probably don't amount to much for others; and for society as a whole ...
- nonrandomstring 3y agoLots of software is fun. Games are great. So is music. You're probably unaware of my contributions in both these fields, and that's okay because the world moves on. But the author of the piece is clearly talking about "in production" as public-facing code with real implications to real people's lives. With scenarios like Boeing and Fujitsu Horizon popping up there's also a need for "grown up" software engineering. I don't think encouraging people into reckless development methodologies helps here. There's still room for lots of fun, if you also know when it's time to be serious.
