It depends. There was a time I was eating 1400 calories and exercising 1-2hrs, and I was quite young. I would say I noticed some depletion of energy, but I wasn't really too hungry. I also wouldn't say I had particularly good eating habits.
When you lose weight it helps to adhere to patterns of eating that promote fullness. Plenty of fruits and veg along with whole grains go a long way. However you must also eat much less desert and high calorie foods.
> I wonder to what extent that's because they've never properly felt not hungry?
I'm not sure what you mean, but this doesn't seem to be the way to think about it. It's more like an addiction to me, in that it involve many things, not necessarily including despair and mental illness, but they're often involved.
To your point, I would say I have felt depleted of energy during weight loss. It really is about total nutrition. If I had known then what I know now, I'd have eaten 2000-2200 cal to lose 1-2lbs / week, and felt totally fine.
However the point of being able to consume 900net cals at basically your caloric max age and still be content and feel "not hungry" has always been interesting to me. Although, I think I drank tons of coffee.
