I think the Lamport Clock (and the segue into Vector Clocks, Maekawa's Algorithm, RAFT, Spanner) is one of the top 5 most-mind-expanding parts of the traditional CS education. Such a cool concept, not terribly complicated at the micro-level, but enables such leverage "downstream".
