Here's a couple recent ones: Game I made for the Library of Congress' Game Challenge this year. Combination of a match-3 game, and a society simulation, such as the Civilization series. Part I thought was neat was Tetris style swap powers you earn with trominos and tetraminos, as well as pentaminos for structure criteria.
