Polish mint creates first "flying coin"
- getwiththeprog 3y agoA coin with a motor, that levitates over a special pad. Hints at a possible future of ubiquitous metals, where technique of creation becomes a store of value.
- dTal 3y agoIt's not a "store" of value if you can't get the value back out - merely a "sink" of value. Both rare metals and intricate mechanisms possess scarcity, but of the two only one can be melted down - the other is not fungible, and can only convey value by fiat the same way as regular currency. This is the same objection I have to those who claim that bitcoin is useful because it provides arbitrage across the price of electricity in geographical locations - you need electricity to make bitcoins, and they are easier to send than joules. But you can't get the electricity back out! It's gone forever, the bitcoin being merely a token of the wasted effort.
- dr_kiszonka 3y agoI wonder if it was inspired by LK-99. Sounds like that mint is a fun place to work!
- dTal 3y ago> Its denomination is 1,766 Cameroonian francs, equivalent to approximately 11.70 Polish zloty or €2.69. But “its real value is significantly higher than its nominal one”, says the mint. That is a shame and a wasted opportunity. Nobody will spend this coin, and therefore in reality it is not a coin. They should have made its face value some large number, exceeding manufacturing cost.
