Can AI Unlock the Secrets of the Ancient World?
- freitzkriesler2 3y agoLots of ancient texts haven't been translated yet to English. I'm looking forward to reading it! (Greco roman mythology nerd here)
- kromem 3y agoYeah. Having a searchable database of translations for all texts discovered and translatable will be amazing.
- RecycledEle 3y agoI believed that when I was an undergrad. Then I finally got the unabridged Thomas Aquinas. Now I appreciate those who abridge ancient, unreadable garbage into something worth reading.
- bamboozled 3y agoWill be amazed if we’ve left something really groundbreaking behind. Yes it will be interesting to read the old texts but I’d say most ideas that matter persisted until the present day. It will still be a cool thing to watch and hopefully I’m wrong and the mysteries of the universe are written down somewhere else n an ancient scroll about to be uncovered.
- inglor_cz 3y ago"but I’d say most ideas that matter persisted until the present day." I wouldn't be so sure. All original texts from Classical Antiquity that we now have would fit onto one bookshelf today. That's not a lot for a civilization that spanned many centuries and several timezones, and cultivated both rhetoric and philosophy. The loss of knowledge caused by natural deterioration of papyrus in European climate must have been significant.
- bamboozled 3y agoHope you’re right because I feel like modern civilisation needs a bit of inspiration. There has to be more than ecological destruction and shareholder greed, right ?
