Was writing something similar. When I'm outside, I'm constantly scanning the environment for potential threats. That's true regardless of the time of the day but it's heightened at night because I'm less likely to perceive one on peripheral vision alone. I'm fairly sure if I was shown those pictures in an environment where I'm under no physical threat I'd point to the brightest spots.
