I’d love this, mostly because WhatsApp, surprisingly, provides far better UX than the Signal app.
For example, there is still no way to back up or export chat history from Signal. It’s about two taps to do this in WhatsApp. As much as I like being free of Meta’s grasp, I can’t really recommend a chat app that makes backups essentially impossible.
- yorwba 3y agoSettings → Chats → Backups. Of course it's only designed to be restored by Signal instead of e.g. giving you plain text to grep through.
- infotainment 3y agoThis is actually only available in Signal for Android (the desktop and iOS clients lack this feature), and also, as you note, it's not really in a usable format. WhatsApp allows easy plain text export, which is much more usable. The fact that Signal doesn't support such a basic feature is, IMO, inexcusable.
- spurgu 3y agoIt's great for security - I know my supposedly encrypted discussions aren't lying around somewhere in plaintext.
- infotainment 3y agoNot necessarily; even if data backup was totally impossible, anyone you're chatting with could still be screenshotting everything you say. One should never assume that communication won't be backed up / screenshotted / etc.
- spurgu 3y agoThat's important to keep in mind when dealing with sensitive content yes, but when talking about just generic privacy I doubt I have neurotic friends and family members screenshotting everything. Recipient's phone could also be compromised. There are various threat scenarios. But having plaintext backups would make it very likely that your communications are mostly insecure.
