Agreed it is probably as simple as free speech. I hope that it is useful to some citizens. But for me the real story is why Carlson is the only western journalist who has done it recently. I've seen many interviews with Putin from non western sources and am familiar with his career and opinions. I just feel that there are too few western journalists (even in neutral, non NATO countries) who aren't earning their pay.

It's because journalists will ask Putin questions that he doesn't wish to answer. Tucker Carlson will not. Russia arrests, imprisons, and poisons journalists doing actual journalism: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/mar/30/russia-arrests-wall-street-journal-reporter-on-espionage-charges-evan-gershkovich https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/mar/30/russia-arrests... https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/dozens-detained-moscow-rally-russian-soldiers-wives-rights-group-2024-02-03/ https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/dozens-detained-moscow-... https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-investigates-journalist-online-news-outlet-justifying-terrorism-2023-11-01/ https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-investigates-jou... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60749279 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60749279 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-ukraine-war-critic-vladimir-kara-murza-prison-sentence-opposition-vladimir-putin/ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-ukraine-war-critic-vladi... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/23/russian-journalists-putin-laws-criminalising-independent-reporting https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/23/russian-journa...

The guy can do whatever he wants of course. Let's just not call him a "journalist", please.
