tl;dr: you're not a Zoroastrian if either of your parents weren't. A grim fact of social organizations like religions is, they have to have some recruiting mechanism or they inevitably die out. You're Jewish if your mother was Jewish; Catholics catch them as babies, baptize them. Baptists and Mormons recruit vigorously. Even Unitarians are a catch-all for folks disaffected from other religions. It's a kind of social Darwinism I suppose.
