It's time to admit that genes are not the blueprint for life
- delichon 3y ago"And all argue that agency and purpose are definitive characteristics of life that have been overlooked in conventional, gene-centric views of biology." The gene-centric view is that agency and purpose are useful, often critical phenomenon to be leveraged in producing more genes. The agency-centric view is that genes are useful, often critical phenomenon to be leveraged in producing more agents. Both frames are useful in different contexts, divided mostly by duration. Within our lives agency more immediately impacts our survival. Between many generations the leverage of genes becomes more clear. We're relatively good at thinking like an agent. The ability to also think like a gene is important because of it's large power to explain the biology we see.
