I agree some format to attach more metadata into schematics is useful, especially if enough good modules become easily available -- something as simple as "hey this is a 5V rated component" is nice not to have look up sometimes.
But to add to the wishlist of innovations in PCB layout; someone please give us better gerber editing/conversion tools. Geber strikes me as being very like pdf -- absolutely standard, well reproducible, but awful to edit in any way other than 'intended'.
- napowderly 3y agoIndeed! We do support quite a few parameters for component selection today, but definitely want to add a lot more. I think this opens up some exciting possibilities, for example not needing to explicitly call out a part number for generic components in your source code, retaining information about what the requirements of that part are. Of course in production you would want a lock file to make sure things are not changing arbitrarily, but I personally would have loved something like that while I was dealing with chip shortages a few years back.
