What needs to be done to get rid of SMS as 2FA? Fed regulation? It will be slow (ie, took many years for the US to fully get rid of mag stripes as the standard), but at least it will motivate US companies (effects to possibly ripple across the pond) to get their shit together or find a new vendor. Multiple banks I use still use SMS as primary 2FA. Kind of sad.
