Most people in the US pay for phones that come with a call/texting plan, usually unlimited these days. There's little demand for alternatives because pretty much everyone buys phones under contract. SMS is really the only thing you can expect people to have, if your business is WhatsApp-only then a lot of Americans won't ever try it.
