This is all anecdotal, but ditto. I'll typo words into similarly written but completely unrelated words. At this point, after decades of typing, I'm not thinking word by word -- the sentence is entering my brain and my fingers are unthinkingly spitting it out. Writing by hand is much slower, but it's similar. I only think about letters or even individual words when I screw up.
