Ted Nugent and Wayne Kramer: An unlikely friendship, forged in Detroit soul
- rmason 3y agoI call them Detroit music's odd couple. I don't know how well known MC-5 and Wayne Kramer are for non-boomers and those outside Michigan. They were my favorite band in high school. The MC-5 were the first band to have an actual hype man, long before it became a thing in the rap world. A guy would get on stage before the show and in a long monologue would wind the crowd up before the band took the stage. The MC-5 were the only band to perform outside at the tumultuous 1968 Chicago Democratic convention dealing with tear gas and dodging police batons. Sadly the band still hasn't been admitted to the rock and roll hall of fame although I specifically register to vote for them each year. One of the most famous Detroit venues for rock music in the sixties was the Grande Ballroom. The building is falling down and numerous attempts of fixing it have fallen through but the city won't tear it down. They painted a mural on the side and it was of the MC-5. They were chosen over other Detroit legends who played there like Alice Cooper, Bob Segar and Ted Nugent. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/grande-ballroom#:~:text=Although%20it%20started%20as%20a,for%20Detroit%20in%20the%201960s https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/grande-ballroom#:~:text=....
