- cubefox 3y agoOverregulation means lower GDP, which means we are significantly poorer than US Americans.
- lores 3y agoThat is very true on paper, but I wonder why, when I travel to/through America, everything feels poorer. Maybe it's the stroad landscape in small towns, or the insane cost of living in Brooklyn, but everything that's not Nature feels distinctly more bland, mediocre and futile than Western Europe. Talking to people does not change that feeling. It's like a million facades making the same emptiness, in a peculiar way I can't quite put my finger on. Friendly people, stunning landscape, but a bigger TV does not make one richer in any way that matters.
- piva00 3y agoOr the seemingly crumbling infrastructure, airports that make me feel I'm traveling back to the 90s, metro systems that are filthier and noisier than almost any other I've ever taken (even the ones in developing countries). You being bombarded by ads everywhere, and for bizarre/dystopian products (like healthcare or medicine), payday loans, lawyers. It makes me icky to travel in the US. I agree with you, there's a hollowness in American urbanscapes that's hard to put a finger on. Even bustling areas in SF or NYC feel... Decadent?
- xigoi 3y agoDoes it matter that Americans have more money if they have to spend half of it on healthcare?
