I think if we fill in the ellipsis it adds a bit more context:
“ feeling marginalized and discriminated against, had long been fighting to protect their civil rights.”
Further, looking at Demographics under https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagorno-Karabakh https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagorno-Karabakh
It seems “Armenian minority” may have been meant in the context of all of Azerbaijan, not of that particular region, where it seems Armenians were a majority.
- saturatedanalog 3y agoIt "may have been", but the text itself does not say so. Also, I mentioned "neutral perspective" but you are trying to disprove it using a biased website. If you want to see the bias, do what I did: Edit that page and include a made-up accusation(s) for both sides of the conflict at different times. Your accusation for the Armenian side will be removed within minutes if not seconds. On the contrary, your accusation for the Azerbaijani side will stay there for months. This clearly shows, the very same people who are in charge of that page (any other highly politicized page) has significant bias. Now I feel guilty further politicizing HN, but I just cannot help it after being exposed to political content in not-seemingly political posts.
- fipar 3y agoNo need to apologize, plus, I think energy is always a political issue, though not always involving more than one country, much less countries at war. I feel you did politicize this when editing your quote from the article, which prompted my response. I am well aware Wikipedia is open to moderation abuse, but I stand by my use of it as a reference for the demographical distribution of population in that area. For what it’s worth, I think this conflict is yet another leftover from the collapse of the Soviet empire and I suspect things may have turned out better for both sides if that enclave has been split into its own republic once the USSR no longer existed.
- fipar 3y agoI should have said “No need to feel guilty” instead of “No need to apologize”, hopefully the message stays mostly the same.
- fipar 3y agoTo avoid relying in Wikipedia, here’s another source claiming Armenians are a minority in Azerbaijan but (were) a majority in this conflict region: https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/azerbaijan/ https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/azerbaijan/
- saturatedanalog 3y agoThank you for the link. I have checked the official census data and found out that Armenians being minority in the region as the article reports is just wrong.
- saturatedanalog 3y agoIt seems the comment I just made a quote from the linked article is flagged. Here, I am writing it below again for future reference. It is interesting at the least the comment quoting the article is flagged/deleted but the article submission itself is intact. I do not come to HN for politics and try to refrain from going into it, but does the author really not see how this sounds from a neutral perspective: "an Armenian minority living in the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh region ... demands for secession from Azerbaijan"
