Completely unfair. Car manufacturers have an obligation to seek profit, and externalize as many costs as possible. To attribute greed to "them" as a slight against their character is utter nonsense.
The car manufacturers sell SUVs because the people demand them. I think it's great to curb demand, that is the role of government. Since the problem with these vehicles is particularly exacerbated in the city, it makes sense to have higher fees specific to the city, like parking fees. However, city residents are excluded from the upcharge!! WTF!! This is blaming the knife for chopping off your hand.

These are massive corporations, let them pay for their own PR rather than contributing your time pro bono to repeat the mythological shareholder value maximization law. Companies are not under an obligation to make vehicles which are bad for their customers, that’s a choice. SUVs became popular because they were heavily marketed - Detroit couldn’t compete with Japanese manufacturers on quality or price in cars, but they were able to convince American buyers to switch to much higher margin vehicles which their competitors didn’t offer. It saved their business and generated billions in profits by doubling the profit margin at the same time the average selling price jumped, but it reversed decades of safety and environmental progress. Millions of people lost their lives or had them permanently altered due to that choice, and those are just the direct impacts before you consider the local and global pollution.
- jiveturkey 3y ago> doubling the profit margin to which i say, well done. corporations are amoral and should be treated as such.
