Ask HN: What do you use instead of GitHub?
Hitting 15 years of GitHub usage. Now wondering where we go next? Is it just something that lives on with you like your email provider or do we take source code elsewhere? What do you use?
- stop50 3y agoMy own gitea/forgejo instance
- sgbeal 3y agoThe Fossil SCM (https://fossil-scm.org https://fossil-scm.org), self-hosted (https://fossil.wanderinghorse.net/r/ https://fossil.wanderinghorse.net/r/). Though i have a github account, i don't actively use it except to clone third-party repos now and then. Full disclosure: i'm a long-time Fossil SCM contributor.
- apapapa 3y agoThe solution is probably to self host git and sync an encrypted incremental backup to many clouds... I don't code much though
- andy99 3y agoI have tried self-hosting. It is very easy to do on a VPS and you get the vendor VPS backup automatically (to which you would presumably add another backup option) That said, github has features like review, comparison, user management, that obviously you wouldn't have if you just self-hosted.
