Aside: I know the post was partly an emotional exploration. But, as this is HN, I figure I can step into the pedantic. This is related to a 'Stopping Problem', correct? The trouble I'm having is I'm not all that sure which one he's in, so I don't know what the optimal solution is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimal_stopping https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimal_stopping I think he's in a case of the 'Opera Parking Lot', but then the solution for that isn't really all that easy to find and I'm not about to try to derive it. Does anyone know the optimal solution for parking at the Opera? Also, am I totally wrong about what stopping problem he's in?
