Tesla power steering probe upgraded after thousands more incidents reported
- zelon88 3y agoMaybe replacing the steering column, a 6lb steel shaft, with drive by wire at a cost 10lbs of rare earth magnets, 50lbs of copper, 10 computer chips, many position sensors, and 150k lines of code was a bad idea.
- millzlane 3y agoEven with a broken wheel I was able to steer to a safe side of the road. It's scary to think of how the Tesla or any electric car with drive by wire would react in that scenario.
- jerlam 3y agoI think the only vehicle with steer-by-wire is the Cybertruck. This is plain old bad engineering.
- bradyd 3y agoInfiniti has been doing steer-by-wire for over a decade.
- borkyborkbork 3y agoWith a steering column backup. Cybertruck is the first without the column to spear you in an accident.
- thebruce87m 3y agoAny car. Doesn’t have to be electric.
- homeless_engi 3y agoThe vehicles affected were not drive by wire. It sounds like you are referring to a system in the Cybertrunk, but this article is discussing Model 3 and Model Y which do not have a physical steering column.
- FireBeyond 3y agoHe means "maybe there was more to the simplicity of the steering column" i.e maybe Tesla shouldn't have been so hasty to remove.
- djmips 3y agoThis isn't really a story other than Tesla.
- electrondood 3y agoExactly. This kind of thing happens to other manufacturers all the time. If you google "ford power steering recall" for example.
- FireBeyond 3y agoYou're literally saying "this shouldn't be a story just because Tesla" by ... pointing to a litany of examples of "stories where it's NotTesla". IOW it's not a story because Tesla... it's just another vehicle recall story.
- happytiger 3y ago> In multiple instances, complainants said they were able to remedy the situation by turning their Muskmobile off and on again, but the fix was temporary and only a steering rack replacement was able to fully resolve the issue. Nice to see professional journalism standards are alive and well.
- stonogo 3y agoYou must not be familiar with The Register. This has been its editorial voice since day one. It's equally derogatory to all subjects.
- glitchcrab 3y agoYup, I've worked for a small UK company which was on the receiving end of the Reg's reporting; this is pretty tame compared to what they said about us.
