JetBrains' unremovable AI assistant prompts customer outcry
- palata 3y ago> Asked what portion of JetBrains' customers have objected to AI Assistant, a spokesperson said, "We can't say for sure how well these opinions represent the position of all of our customers." I have been a big fan of JetBrains until now, but I am looking closely at how they go with the AI stuff (and they just changed CEO, right?). I don't want anything to do with AI, and if my JetBrains IDEs do not allow me to _entirely_ disable _anything that has to do with it_ (be it for training, telemetry, or just suggestions), it will be a reason for me to completely drop it and start hating JetBrains. To me they may as well introduce ads between my lines of code. I wish it was _clearly_ opt-in when installing the IDE, just like the vim plugin (and some others).
- gmueckl 3y agoThe AI assistant is entirely opt-in already. It is a separate product rquiring a separate paid subscription. The only misstep here on JetBrains' part is the by-default visible client UI tab for it that prompts the user to sign up. Close that and everything is ss it was before. I do not fully understand the user outcry over this.
- palata 3y ago> I do not fully understand the user outcry over this. Well, in my experience with the evolution of software in the last 15 years, I see a lot to be concerned about. Again JetBrains just changes CEO, it could be the beginning of a new era (hopefully not).
