You could rip those streams if you really wanted to. Even an analog rip could have better quality than a DVD. (Analog rips don't really circumvent the DMCA and would be legal at least in Japan (my jurisdiction), where copying stuff (including rented stuff) is legal as long as it's for private purposes).
