Whenever physicist don't know something, instead of just saying, they call it dark... so this is all Dark Knowledge as far as I am concerned...
Would love to discover new things about universe for sure... just let's not pretend our ignorance can be wrapped as knowledge.
- thyrsus 3y agoIf we can formalize our ignorance, then it can become knowledge. Uncertainty is another name for ignorance, and quantum mechanical formalism of uncertainty has been enormously useful. [Edit] Quantum mechanics makes enormous and pervasively verified predictions. This theory will be useful to the extent it makes such verified predictions.
- elashri 3y ago> Uncertainty is another name for ignorance No, quantum uncertainty is not about about precision of measurement or ignorance. It is fundamental concept of quantum theory that is battle tested (in terms of measurements).
- elashri 3y agoThe motivation behind calling it dark is mainly because it is really dark matter (in the sense that you cannot see it) that does not interact with electromagnetic force like ordinary matter which allows us to see it. And people usually refer to this work as dark sector which doesn't refer to the sector that we don't know (although we don't know much about in reality) but to the sector that is different from our ordinary matter.
