Gavin Newsom says he was at a Target and saw someone walk out without paying
- k310 3y agoHe asked a worker why the person steals ( and they blamed the Governor before looking at him twice and recognizing him.) People steal because they can. ( and a certain matter of scruples ) Target can assign humans to loss prevention, or shortly come up with some AI-powered gadget or gadgets if they want. Just my opinion. Cash buyers pay an overhead that subsidizes credit card buyers, average taxpayers pay taxes that the wealthy find ways to avoid, and so on. These decisions are made by corporations and institutions. I just do what I think is right. That includes not blaming people I dislike for things they similarly don't control.
- aurareturn 3y agoI've always been center-left in my political views. In the last few years, I understand why some people vote right. We need to be hard on crime. If the left isn't hard on crime, I'm not going to vote for them.
- defrost 3y agoWith the highest per capita incarceration rates in the G20 though, how's that working out for the USofA though? Not hard enough, better double down and imprison more people? Is there a second prong, perhaps, of addressing causes of crime and homelessness, lifting people up, paying serious attention to the rehabiitation of those imprisoned, etc. that might also reduce crime .. and perhaps at a lower cost in the longer term?
- aurareturn 3y agoWhat is the crime to incarceration rate?
- defrost 3y agoA statistic. The comment above was about reflecting on comparitive policies in G20 nations.
- aurareturn 3y agoNo. I meant, what is the crime to incarceration rate? Meaning, for every crime that was committed, what was the incarceration rate? Per capita doesn't mean much because you could have way more crimes per capita. How about crime to any punishment rate? Specifically, I'd like to see these rates for California, and Northern California, which is what I care about.
