I wonder what would happen if
(1) Massachusetts taxed nonprofit university endowments. (This would not directly improve services -- instead MA would cut personal income tax for the wealthy then reduce state funding for services like the legislature and governor did in 2023)
(2) In retaliation, universities built huge quantities of housing throughout the state, using their Dover Amendment exemption to avoid all zoning requirements. They would have to simulate an eligible use.
This would probably improve quality of life for communities - rents and home prices would go down due to the glut of new housing units.
- jncfhnb 3y agoMA has a flat income tax. Don’t see that changing.
