I don’t want to sound alarmist, but in recent years I feel that the post-WWII way of life in America is undergoing severe stress. The cost of health care, higher education, and housing have reached their breaking points. To speak in more specific terms related to the article, the cost of driving has gone up substantially in recent years. It would be easier for many Americans to cope with these costs if our towns and cities were better suited to accommodate alternatives to driving, but many aren’t, unfortunately, and those that are tend to be very expensive.
I think American society is destined for a “reboot” where we make radically different changes regarding housing, transportation, higher education, and other aspects of society, where the status quo is becoming too costly to maintain. We should work quickly to find solutions and make a smoother transition, lest these issues turn into a full-blown crisis, which I fear in some areas has already happened, as evidenced (albeit anecdotally) by the massive increase in homelessness I’ve seen in California’s cities in recent years.
