Hey Hackers of Hacker News,
I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you and would love to get your valuable feedback!
Introducing a blend of CloudZero with a touch of Kiali (Istio) tailored specifically for SaaS developers to monitor and track both costs and carbon emissions.
> Why Seek Hacker Feedback?

> Questions for You:
- How do you currently manage and optimize your SaaS costs?
- Are you actively considering the environmental impact of your applications, and if so, how are you addressing it?
- Any specific features you'd love to see in a tool like this?
Let's hack together to create a tool that not only empowers developers but also contributes to a more sustainable tech industry. Your feedback is gold, so don't hold back!
Thanks for being an awesome community, and happy hacking!
- XCSme 3y agoHey, congrats on the landing page: -> How do you currently manage and optimize your SaaS costs? My costs are usually fixed, as I buy/purchase VPS/dedicated server, no auto-scaling cloud -> I think environment impact of serving my landing page is negligible compared to other sources of pollution. What I care about is performance and user experience, I think for humanity it's better if I save a person 5 minutes each day by providing a faster/better app, which will also improve the carbon footprint. -> I am not sure exactly how it connects with all my services and calculates costs, I would be more concerned about providing all my requests/customer data to a 3rd party than about the environmental aspect. If no such detailed data is shared, then why is this tool better than creating a custom dashboard/graph that multiplies the requests count with a 1g CO2/request to calculate total output?
- sugate1 3y agoHey! Thank you very much for your feedback! -> I agree that optimizing costs is different in case of no auto-scaling or PaaS underlay. It's great to hear that you have a fixed cost structure with VPS/dedicated servers. -> Good to know, I agree either, but I think in the case of a huge backend (with a lot of microservices) it might have an important carbon impact. Indeed, the Cloud now has a greater carbon footprint than the airline industry (See: https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-staggering-ecological-impacts-of-computation-and-the-cloud/ https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-staggering-ecological...). -> Yes, we should be better at showing how we do and how it's a better alternative to in-house development. If you have any more thoughts or questions, feel free to share!
