As someone who makes plots every now and then with breaks of several months in between, I have found the ggplot syntax surprisingly intuitive and easy to remember even after a long break. Importantly, the basic syntax can be used to compose quite complicated graphs, although it does have its limits. It's also quite nice to be able to use the same interface in both R and Python, although it is obvious that it was originally developed for R.
