Now that's interesting. I remember years ago profiling the gettimeofday() function on various platforms. It was fine on all except our AWS VMs. Turns out it wasn't implemented as a vDSO and the performance was all over the place. That's been fixed since. We use getpid() in logging and maybe it's unnecessary.
