Everyone here seems to be forgetting the root of this problem:
Algorithms that select content (including ads) need to be treated as publishers rather than platforms.
"facebook.com/users/my_friend/posts_in_cronological_order" is a platform
"facebook.com/my_feed" is a publisher
- stavros 3y agoThat doesn't sound like a bad distinction. If you're shuffling the stories around to maximize some metric, you're no longer an impartial carrier, you're actively biasing what someone sees.
- 2OEH8eoCRo0 3y agoWasn't this how things were before Section 230? If your act as a dumb pipe then you're a provider and if you curate then you're a publisher.
- shuntress 3y agoThere wasn't much Internet before Section 230. At that time, it was still kind of an open question.
