Ask HN: Why would Zuck giveaway $5M worth LLMs for Free?
With the latest CodeLlama 70B release, It seems Mark Zuckerberg really wants to release their language models. Llama 3 might follow later. The cost approximately seems to be around $5M so far and why would Zuck would want to do that?
Developer goodwill?
Crush OpenAI?
Choke Google?
- neximo64 3y agoAs they say if it's free you are the product! More seriously Meta is experimenting with AI and the cost of $5m you've come up with is as good as R&D, its set to depreciate in value rapidly as the iteration on the models improve, and its just a step along the way. There is no way to monetise it realistically with the business model Meta currently has which keeps developers in their own ecosystem.
