It's actually worse than that. There was an article recent, I don't think I'll be able to find it now, describing the incorporation of product placement in shows now as a means of perpetual revenue. VHS let you pause recording and skip the ads, but now shows have ads fused right into them.
Every time I see a show with a 5 second scene of a brand new car driving on a street, or a shot of the front of the car with the main character(s) stepping in/out, all I think is this is an ad.
