Courts are slowly chipping away at a law the internet was built on
- account-5 3y agoI don't think bypassing a law used by huge platforms to avoid responsibility for the harms they are actively complicit in is a bad thing.
- Finnucane 3y agoIndeed, if I post some shit on some platform, that platform isn't responsible for what I say. However, the underlying mechanics of the platform can influence who sees my post and how it subsequently read, used, transmitted. And people who work for those platforms--programmers, managers, and so on--are responsible for making choices about how that works. There should be accountability there.
- bell-cot 3y agoReality: Courts are slowly chipping away at the use of Section 230, by mega-scale social media empires, to ~99% outsource production costs and liability for crap that they collect ~99% of the profits from. (BTW - The internet, the web, and social media all predate the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and its Section 230.)
