Yes, but they won’t be. Any such trial would make the institution look bad. If there’s anything you need to know about academia in the USA, it’s that they fear losing face more than Communist Chinese party members.
- JumpCrisscross 3y ago> they fear losing face Everyone fears losing face. What’s changing is academia is losing its perceived moral footing. That makes them fair (and popular) game for an enterprising prosecutor.
- spamizbad 3y agoThe same people who donate to elect chief prosecutors also donate to these schools. If you ran a campaign on prosecuting scientific fraudsters at Harvard the next election cycle you'd have 20 multi-millionaires trying to scalp you in hopes they can parlay that into their mediocre child's admission.
- FredPret 3y ago... used to donate to these schools
- tomcam 3y agoNope. There's way more money in academia than in prosecution
- JumpCrisscross 3y ago> more money in academia than in prosecution Doesn’t matter. Different incentives. As another person said, prosecuting academia is right now a winning political position. With donors and the electorate.
- Ferret7446 3y agoI guess it depends on how you perceive "face". Admitting to and taking responsibility for mistakes can be good, but both academia and the PRC are united in their delusion that pretending to never make any mistakes is somehow good, even when it's almost an open secret that those mistakes exist. Doubling down and tripling down, if you will.
